Ndola & district Chamber of Commerce and Industry Advocate for Enhanced Tax Compliance Measures Among MSMEs

Representatives from various sectors, including the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, Zambia Association of Manufacturers, private sector and USAID, convened for a productive engagement to address the critical issue of increasing tax compliance among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). During the discussion, Mr. Joseph Malisawa, President of the Ndola Chamber of Commerce, underscored the importance of distinguishing MSMEs from larger corporations in terms of regulatory treatment. He emphasized the necessity of integrating tax education into the primary and secondary school curriculum to foster awareness and compliance from an early age.

Mr. Malisawa also raised concerns regarding the adverse effects of the absence of tax clearance certificates on business operations. He highlighted instances where businesses fail to secure contracts due to the lack of a tax clearance certificate, particularly in the first quarter of the year, resulting in reduced commercial activity and negative repercussions for industry stakeholders. Additionally, he emphasized the challenges associated with withholding Value Added Tax (VAT), noting that delays in the issuance of VAT certificates by agents have hindered compliance efforts and negatively impacted the industry.

The stakeholders collectively emphasized the need for streamlined processes and enhanced education to promote tax compliance among MSMEs, thereby fostering a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth and development.
